Railway and Local History

Don Cipriano’s former railway station was initially called “Parada km 128” and was later renamed “Don Cipriano” in honor of Cipriano Newton. Cipriano Newton donated the land for the station. It belonged to the railway branch that connected La Plata with Lezama; the station is one of Chascomús’s historical resources. The dedication explains the station’s later name, while the connection to La Plata and Lezama establishes its regional railway context. The town’s history also encompasses community ties beyond the railway.

Escuela Primaria Nº 20 “Angélica Newton” is located in the hamlet of Don Cipriano, on Ruta Provincial 20. On August 28, 2025, it celebrated its 100th anniversary. It also remains a social and community touchstone for Don Cipriano. The anniversary and its continuing community role point to two time frames: the school’s long history and its present-day importance in the town.

Chapel and Religious Heritage

Construction of the Capilla Sagrada Familia in Don Cipriano began in 1962. It was built by José del Valle and a group of local residents. Sagrada Familia (Don Cipriano) is listed as a religious institution in the Diocese of Chascomús. This brings together two perspectives: its origins in local participation and its religious classification. For thematic orientation, the local connections can be distinguished as railway and naming history, community life around the school, and the history of religious construction.

Getting There via Ruta Provincial 20

From ChascomĂşs, you can reach Don Cipriano via Ruta Provincial 20. As of August 2026, the section leading to the hamlet was unpaved. When planning your journey, take this stretch of road into account and check conditions before setting off.

Culture in ChascomĂşs Partido

The wider destination of ChascomĂşs Partido includes other cultural attractions. The Mausoleo de los CaĂdos en la Batalla de ChascomĂşs is a National Historic Monument. It honors the combatants who fell on November 7, 1839.

The Palacio Municipal in Chascomús was inaugurated in 1940 in a distinctive Neocolonial style within the Art Deco work of Francisco Salamone. The year of inauguration and the stylistic description offer different points of reference: 1940 dates the inauguration, while the Neocolonial design places the building within the context of Salamone’s Art Deco work.

The Museo Pampeano has collections of gaucho objects made from a variety of materials, daguerreotypes, coins and medals, weapons, archaeological remains from ChascomĂşs Partido, and clothing. The collection ranges from pictorial and numismatic objects to clothing and archaeological finds. The regional examples have different emphases: commemoration, architecture, and collections offer distinct approaches to the history of the Partido.
