Alsina combines a protected historic center with a railway station whose architecture and warehouses point to the area’s former wool industry. The Fiesta del Locro y la Empanada adds a culinary focus. The town can be understood through two themes: architectural and railway history, and traditional Argentine cuisine.

Historic Center, Railway Station, and Architectural History

Alsina’s historic center was designated an Área de Protección Histórica (Historic Protection Area). The protected area is bounded by Avenida San Martín, 25 de Mayo, Primera Junta, and Mitre; the municipal ordinance designating it was announced in 2017. The railway grounds of Estación Alsina are also part of the city’s protected historic architectural heritage.

Opened in 1886, Estación Alsina was designed in the English style. Its warehouses were built specifically for wool from the area’s significant sheep-farming industry. The station, its architectural style, and its warehouses thus connect railway history with a specific agricultural context: the warehouses were used for wool from local sheep farms.

Avenida San Martín boulevard runs alongside the railway tracks and is planted with native tree species as well as species introduced by immigrants. The avenue is lined with preserved Italianate-style buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The plantings and buildings give this section a different architectural character from the English-style railway station.

Alsina’s adobe buildings showcase another building style. They preserve the traditional technique of old earthen houses known as quinchos. Alongside the railway station and Italianate buildings, adobe construction and its traditional methods are also part of the townscape.

Traditional Cuisine in Alsina

The Fiesta del Locro y la Empanada in Alsina features locro, empanadas, and other traditional Argentine dishes. The festival adds a culinary theme to the town’s architectural history. If you’re interested in local cuisine, you’ll find specific dishes named here rather than just a general description of regional food.

More Highlights in Baradero Partido

The wider destination of Baradero Partido offers other experiences, distinct from Alsina’s town and architectural history. In Baradero, Reserva Parque del Este has self-guided trails and a lagoon. There is also a mini zoo where injured or sick animals are rehabilitated. The trails, lagoon, and animal rehabilitation make this a destination focused on nature and animal conservation.

In Baradero, Iglesia Santiago Apóstol was declared a provincial historic monument in 1990. Paseo del Puerto uses renovated old port warehouses for exhibitions and fairs. This reflects a different approach to historic buildings: a church has received landmark designation, while former port buildings are used for exhibitions and fairs.

Colonia Suiza is also in the wider destination of Baradero Partido. This small area was founded by Swiss immigrants and has rolling fields and clusters of trees. Its landscape and immigration history offer another regional highlight alongside Alsina’s railway station and the town’s various architectural styles.
