La Vitícola offers two concrete starting points for planning a trip: the history of a colonization attempt with Irish immigrants that took place over a defined period, and cycling routes with different distance details and technical difficulty ratings. When choosing a place to stay, you can first decide whether to focus on historical developments or a ride. The figures and routes answer different questions: How long is a loop, where is an intermediate destination, and what technical difficulty rating does a route specify?

Colonization and Agricultural Plans

A historical report published in 2005 places a systematic colonization attempt in La Vitícola between February 1889 and March 1891, involving around 700 to 800 Irish immigrants. The number of participants is an estimate; the dates confine the events to just over two years.

The Argentine Vine Culture Co., known in the region as La Vitícola S.A. and represented by David Gartland, planned to cultivate thousands of hectares of vineyards there and establish an agricultural community. These two plans belong together when assessing the project: it combined large-scale viticulture with the idea of an agricultural community.

La Vitícola S.A. owned numerous vineyards in the surrounding area. The project also took advantage of its proximity to the railway and the port of Bahía Blanca to transport supplies and make it possible to market the produce later on. Viticulture and transport links are therefore also part of the project’s historical context.

Choose Cycling Routes by Distance and Route

The mountain bike route “Bahía Blanca–La Vitícola–Bahía Blanca,” listed on Wikiloc, is shown as 70.21 km long with a moderate technical difficulty rating. Its name identifies it as a round trip. Distance and technical rating offer different points of reference when choosing a ride: the number of kilometers describes its length, while the difficulty rating indicates the route’s technical level.

A route description posted in 2024 outlines a circular cycling route starting in Bahía Blanca and passing through Paraje La Hormiga and La Carrindanga, as well as Bordeau. After 33 km, it reaches Estación La Vitícola; the route crosses Ruta 33. Here, 33 km refers to the point at which the Estación is reached, not the total length of the circular route. This figure therefore cannot be directly equated with the 70.21 km of the round trip.

Another route listing, posted on Wikiloc in 2017, is titled “La vitícola (bahia blanca)” and describes a mountain bike route from Paseo Vanoli to La Vitícola. Together, the three descriptions provide different reference points: a round trip with a stated distance and difficulty rating, a circular route with a destination reached after 33 km, and a route with named start and end points. Check the current route and practical accessibility before setting out, as route conditions can change.
