Angola can be discovered from many different perspectives: Mbanza Kongo tells the story of a former kingdom, while Luanda combines urban history, museums and waterfront views. The country also offers landscapes shaped by highlands, coastal dunes, savannah and desert. When planning a trip, you can treat culture, nature and local cuisine as different focal points and tailor your stay to your interests.

History in Mbanza Kongo

Mbanza Kongo lies on a plateau at an altitude of 570 metres and was the former capital of the Kingdom of Kongo. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its urban layout and archaeological remains preserve traces of its traditional, colonial and religious past. This history is reflected not only in individual buildings: Portuguese stone buildings were added to older structures made from local materials or replaced them, following European building methods. Several churches were among the stone buildings.

The religious and social development of the area is also part of its history. Christianity spread, and local elites adopted Western influences without giving up their culture. For travellers interested in culture, the appeal lies in considering the different historical influences together rather than reducing the city to a single period. Mbanza Kongo offers a clear historical focus among Angola’s many discoveries.

Luanda between neighbourhoods and the waterfront

In Angola’s larger cities, such as Luanda, a network of public buses connects different neighbourhoods and provides an affordable way to get around. Luanda can also be explored through its different places: you can stroll along the Marginal waterfront boulevard, while the historic Baixa invites you to discover its colonial character. The beaches on the Ilha do Cabo peninsula offer a chance to relax. These features give the city more than one point of entry—from a waterfront walk to exploring its historic district.

The Mussulo peninsula offers a different experience, with resorts, beach bars and nightlife. If you plan to visit any of these, check in advance whether they are available. From the elevated Fortaleza de São Miguel, you can enjoy wide-ranging views of Luanda Bay and the city skyline. The historic fortress is also home to the National Museum of Military History.

The museums also have their own distinct themes. The Coin Museum traces the history of Angolan currency from its earliest forms to the modern kwanza. The National Museum of Anthropology displays more than 6,000 artefacts from Angola’s ethnic communities. In Luanda, the history of money and collections relating to the country’s communities sit alongside views of the city and its historic sites.

Landscapes in contrast

The Tundavala Gap is a cliff at an altitude of more than 2,200 metres, offering panoramic views across Angola. Kissama National Park covers nearly 10,000 square kilometres of Atlantic coastline and inland savannah. Its landscapes include baobab forests, open grasslands, riverbanks and coastal dunes. This diversity makes the park a different landscape destination from the high-altitude cliff at Tundavala.

Iona National Park also offers a wilderness experience amid varied desert landscapes. Dense vegetation and trees described as reaching up to 50 metres tall define another landscape in the Maiombe Forest. Kalandula Waterfalls offer opportunities for sightseeing and photography; if you plan a visit, check current access arrangements. Kissama National Park is described as home to elephants, buffalo, antelope and ostriches, living freely again in a recovering wilderness.

Culinary traditions

The cuisine offers another way to experience Angolan culture. Cabidela is a traditional stew made with chicken blood, vinegar and spices. Funje, made from cassava or corn flour, is a staple food in Angola. These two examples represent different aspects of food culture: a specific traditional dish and a staple food made from different types of flour.
