Lezhë Castle preserves traces dating back to the 5th century and offers a journey through several eras of the city’s history. Other highlights include the Skanderbeg Memorial, a historic bridge over the Drin and a museum offering insights into the region’s heritage. Those choosing Lezhë as a destination can focus on history and culture or complement their sightseeing with nature experiences and regional cuisine.

Castle, Drin and History

On the hill at the western edge of Lezhë are preserved traces of 5th-century walls, fortifications and the acropolis of ancient Lissus. The castle has Illyrian origins and was rebuilt and fortified during the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Visitors can explore historic ruins inside the castle. From there, panoramic views stretch across the Zadrima plain, the Drin and the city of Lezhë.

The Old Town Bridge is also one of the area’s notable historic structures: it is the oldest bridge built across the Drin and is of historical and artistic value to visitors. The Mlikaj House offers a different perspective on the region’s architectural heritage. It is a two-storey urban vernacular dwelling from the 19th century in the Skënderbeg neighbourhood by the Drin. The house’s walls, roof, windows and doors have architectural value.

The Skanderbeg Memorial stands at the site where the Assembly of Lezhë was held on 2 March 1444 and the League of Lezhë was founded. It was built on the ruins of the Church of Saint Nicholas, where Skanderbeg was buried after his death on 17 January 1468. Inside the memorial hang 25 bronze shields representing his 25 most important battles.

The bronze statue of Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg stands in the historic centre near the site of the assembly. It is 3.7 metres tall and depicts him at the age of 39, when he convened and organised the assembly of the league. As a historic and cultural landmark, the statue is significant to both local and international visitors. The Church of Saint Euphemia, first mentioned in 1343, is also located in Kallmet.

Museums and Regional Culture

The Lezhë Ethnographic Museum preserves and presents the region’s tangible and intangible heritage. Its collection comprises 843 original objects, including folk costumes, household furnishings, tools, musical instruments and handmade weapons; the collection figure may change as cataloguing progresses. Around 315 objects are on public display in the permanent exhibition. It represents Malësia e Madhe, Mirdita and Zadrima. The number of items on display may change if the exhibition space changes. The Lezhë Archaeological Museum was built at the castle and officially opened.

The traditional production of rakija is also part of the region’s culture. In Fishtë, Kallmet and the surrounding area, it is made within families and passed down from generation to generation. In this artisanal process, fruit is naturally fermented and then distilled in traditional copper stills. This offers another way to understand local tradition—not only through buildings and collections, but also through a production method handed down over time.

Nature and Activities Around Lezhë

The landscapes of Lezhë and its surroundings offer opportunities for walking and hiking. The Kune-Vain Lagoon provides a distinct nature-focused experience. It is about 8 kilometres from Lezhë and is Albania’s first protected area. The nearby InfoKulla–Kune-Vain visitor centre is at the entrance to the protected area and provides maps and information about nature trails; the materials available may change.

Day trips to the lagoon are offered, featuring environmental education and wildlife exploration; specific tour offerings may vary. Visitors can also explore the area by bicycle, although conditions on the routes may differ.

Regional Cuisine

The Oazi Fishtë restaurant is located in Fishtë, in the Municipality of Lezhë. It serves traditional Albanian cuisine featuring meat, fish and village dishes, as well as international specialities, in a natural setting. Details of the offering may change. The restaurant adds a culinary highlight alongside the region’s cultural and landscape attractions.
