The Via Egnatia crossed the area that is now Bashkia e Elbasanit, once linking strategic and commercial locations. Today, you can explore sections of the ancient route on foot, on horseback, or by mountain bike. The city of Elbasan lies in the Shkumbin Valley and was historically an important connection point between northern and southern Albania. Those interested in the region’s history will encounter both a significant long-distance road and a place whose role has been shaped by connections over the centuries.
Roman Roads and Early Churches
The Basilica of Bezistani dates from the late 5th to the early 6th century. Its wall paintings and floor mosaics offer a glimpse of the artistic design of this early Christian building. The Basilica of Tepes tells a different historical story: it lies among olive groves near Elbasan and is associated with the ancient cemetery of Scampis. Used as a cemetery church for Roman soldiers, it collapsed in an earthquake in the 6th century.
In Bradashesh, the ancient station of Ad Quintum lies along the Via Egnatia. It served the Romans as a rest stop and horse-changing station. Among the archaeological remains there is a Roman bath complex: frigidarium, tepidarium, and caldarium refer to the cold, warm, and hot rooms; the complex also included a changing room, underfloor heating, and a nymphaeum. These different elements show how varied the design of a Roman bath complex could be.
The Church and Monastery of Saint John Vladimir, west of Elbasan, also tell the story of sacred architecture. The church is a three-aisled basilica, with late frescoes partially preserved in the apse. Access conditions may vary, so it is advisable to inquire before visiting. In Shelcan, the Church of Saint Kolli is considered a notable example of 16th-century Albanian iconography, associated with the Onufri tradition.
Castle, Museum, and Living Traditions
Elbasan Castle is designated as a museum area and serves as a cultural destination for events, exhibitions, and festivals connected to local identity. Notable buildings within the castle include the King’s Mosque, the Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary, the Clock Tower, and the Hamam of Sinan Pasha. Together, they show how different religious and urban architectural styles shape Elbasan’s historic character.
For a glimpse of everyday life, the Ethnographic Museum offers a different perspective on history. It is housed in the Sejdin House, an 18th-century building near the Bezistan plain and a Category I cultural monument. The museum has been based there since 1986 and showcases around 80 types of traditional crafts from Elbasan. The collection reveals links between craftsmanship, ways of life, and economic development over the centuries.
Dita e Verës is one of Elbasan’s major traditional festivals and has ancient pagan roots. The festival marks the beginning of spring and a new cycle in nature. The program includes concerts, cultural and craft activities, and fairs; the specific program may vary. Ballokum, a traditional pastry from Elbasan, is also especially associated with the festival.
Lakes, Forests, and Thermal Springs
In Funar, four lakes or reservoirs lie among pine and oak forests. Fishing is one of the activities available there, and kayaking and canoeing are also possible on the lakes. As the availability of water sports may vary, check before your visit. The combination of forest, water, and different activities gives Funar a character distinct from the historic sites.
The thermal springs of Elbasan, in the village of Tregan, offer another way to experience the landscape. They have been used since Roman times and are about 10–12 kilometers from the city of Elbasan. Offerings include thermal baths, mineral mud treatments, physiotherapy, and wellness services. As the available services may change, it is a good idea to ask about the current selection in advance.
Gjinar offers yet another focus: the town is about 22–24 kilometers southeast of Elbasan and can be reached via the Elbasan-Gjinar road. Road conditions may change. In the mountainous surroundings, characterized by pine forests, Mount Bukaniku is a designated hiking destination; mountain biking is also among the outdoor activities, particularly in the warmer seasons. You can tailor your explorations to the topics that interest you most—from archaeological traces and churches to forest landscapes and water activities.
